Seahawks QB Russell Wilson has filed for divorce from his wife, Ashton. They were married January 2012 and moved together to Seattle, where they were a tandem in many public appearances.

Wilson released a statement through the club Wednesday afternoon through the team.

“I have made the difficult decision to file for divorce. Clearly, decisions like these don’t come easy. Ashton and I respectfully ask for prayers, understanding and privacy during this difficult time. Moving forward, I will have no further comment on this personal matter.”

No other details were immediately available.

Very sad news to hear. Hope things work out for both.

      File before a contract extension.

Awww, man, that’s a little too cynical even for me (and my picture is next to “cynical” in Webster’s).

People are going to be naturally curious, but I’m with jafabian below and hope they can move forward with privacy and respect from others.

Even radioguy is moved to compassion. Remarkable that he is out in front of the story.

        True, but harsh.

Not sure it’s true at all, if the implication is that the filing was timed with the extension in mind. Something tells me that Russell had reasons that were entirely separate from the extension, which in any event is a year away at the earliest…

I’ve been through one those myself and it’s a really hard choice but if it’s what has to be done you’ll come out a stronger, wiser person. I wish you the best Russell and I’ll put you in my prayers as requested.

On the brighter side, I’m sure a young, ripped, super bowl champion QB will have some fun out on the town now that he’s not tied down.

Good luck to both of you! That’s tough.
Only wish I had pulled the trigger this fast – best to decide and move on.
