On track to win their fourth Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup in six years, the Seattle Sounders will host the Portland Timbers in a quarterfinal match at 7:30 p.m. July 9 at the Starfire Sports Complex in Tukwila. The Sounders advanced Tuesday night after defeating the San Jose Earthquakes in a penalty kick shootout following a 1-1 draw.
San Jose opened the scoring in the 24th minute when Steven Lenhart blasted a shot from just outside the penalty area inside the near post. Kenny Cooper tied the match two minutes later with a 10-yard shot past David Bingham.
Gonzalo Pineda, Marco Pappa and Brad Evans all converted their attempts in the shootout before Lamar Neagle nailed the deciding shot. Marcus Hahnemann made four saves, including a crucial stop during the shootout.
The Sounders (15-0-1) remain unbeaten at home during U.S. Open Cup play. Tickets for the Portland match go on sale Thursday.
The Sounders reached four consecutive Cup finals from 2009-12, winning three times from 2009-11.
The Sounders return to MLS action Saturday at D.C. United with a 4 p.m. kickoff at RFK Stadium.
