The Mariners Friday recalled LHP Rob Rasmussen from AAA Tacoma and placed LHP Joe Beimel on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to Aug. 20, with posterior inflammation in his left shoulder. Rasmussen was to be available to the Mariners Friday night when they begin a three-game series with the Chicago White Sox at Safeco Field ( 7:10 p.m.).
Rasmussen, 26, tossed one scoreless inning in his lone appearance with the Rainiers following his option Monday. He is 2-1, 16.20 in eight games with the Mariners (12 ER, 6.2 IP). In nine MLB games this season, he has five shutout appearances, but has allowed 12 earned runs in two innings in the other four games.
Rasmussen was acquired by Seattle from Toronto (along with RHP Jose Ramirez) in exchange for RHP Mark Lowe July 31.
Beimel, 38, went 2-1 with one save and a 4.78 ERA with 19 strikeouts in 42 relief appearances. He was 2-1-1, 2.50 in his first 37 appearances, but has allowed 10 runs in his last five consecutive games to nearly double his ERA.
In his most recent outing Wednesday in Texas, Beimel allowed back-to-back-to-back home runs to the Rangers in the seventh inning and later complained of fatigue.
Beimel signed a minor league contract with Seattle April 2 and began the season in extended spring training before joining the Rainiers.
Friday night’s game will feature two of the top pitchers in the American League, Felix Hernandez and Chris Sale. Hernandez (14-7, 3.65) is coming off an Aug. 15 loss at Boston in which he allowed 10 earned runs. Sale (11-7, 3.32), leads the AL in strikeouts.
