The Mariners Thursday selected eight players on the second day of MLB’s first-year player draft. Through 10 rounds, they have five infielders, three pitchers, a catcher and an outfielder. Nine of the 10 were from the college ranks.
After taking OF Kyle Lewis and INF Joe Rizzo in the first two rounds Wednesday, the Mariners selected INF Bryson Brigman, a sophomore from the University of San Diego who hit .372 the past season and was named first-team All-West Coast Conference for the second consecutive year.
Brigman was selected in the 40th round of the 2014 draft by the Oakland Athletics out of Valley Christian High School in San Jose, but did not sign.
The Mariners took LHP Thomas Burrows from the University of Alabama at No. 117 overall in the fourth round. Burrows went 2-1 with a 0.95 ERA and 12 saves in 21 appearances out of the bullpen for Alabama the past season.
Seattle selected SS Donnie Walton in the fifth round (147th overall) from Oklahoma State University. As a senior, Walton hit .350 with 44 runs, three homers and 43 RBIs. Walton is a three-time All-Big 12 first-team pick.
