The Mariners Wednesday called up RHP Jarrett Grube from AAA Tacoma and, to make room, designated INF Luis Sardinas for assignment. Grube, who will take the roster spot vacated by OF Guillermo Heredia, optioned to the Rainiers earlier Wednesday, was  available when Seattle wraps up a three-game set against the Detroit Tigers at Safeco Field.

Grube, 34, has pitched just two-thirds of an inning in MLB, giving up a home run in one relief appearance for the Angels in 2014.

He had eight starts with the Rainiers this season, where he was 1-2 with a 3.97 ERA in 10 games overall. The 6-foot-4, 220-pounder struck out 46 while walking 12 and recorded at least three strikeouts in each of his 10 appearances. Grube signed with the Mariners as a minor league free agent June 9.

Prior to signing with Seattle, Grube this season went 0-3 with a 4.43 ERA with 37 strikeouts and 10 walks in 11 games, including seven starts, with AAA Columbus (Cleveland).

In 2015 with Columbus, Grube went 9-0 with one save with a 2.26 ERA with 68 strikeouts and 19 walks in 15 games (13 starts).

Grube was in the Mariners organization from 2010-12, compiling a record of 14-16 and a 4.59 ERA in 61 games (45 starts) with AA West Tennessee (2010), AA Jackson (2011) and Tacoma (2010-12).

Grube was selected by Colorado in the 10thround of the 2004 MLB draft out of the University of Memphis.

Sardiñas, 23, hit .252 in 44 games in with Tacoma and .181 in 32 games over three stints with the Mariners this season. Sardiñas was acquired by Seattle from Milwaukee in exchange for outfielder Ramon Flores Nov. 20.

The Mariners, who have won a season-high five games in a row, start RHP Felix Hernandez (6-4, 3.55) against RHP Justin Verlander (12-6, 3.52) Wednesday. Seattle is seven games behind Texas in the AL West, 1.5 ahead of third-place Houston and 2.5 behind the Red Sox for the second wild card.
