The NFL has busted the Seahawks a third time for violating rules against excessive contact during off-season workouts. The league and players union announced Monday the club was fined $400,000, a fifth-round pick in the next draft and a week of organized team activities. Coach Pete Carroll was also fined $200,000.
The Seahawks were fined for a June 6 OTA session, video from which was reviewed independently by the league and union. They cited the no-contact rule in the collective bargaining agreement about player safety:
Voluntary off-season workout programs are intended to provide training, teaching and physical conditioning for players. The intensity and tempo of drills should be at a level conducive to learning, with player safety as the highest priority, and not at a level where one player is in a physical contest with another player.
The Seahawks were previously busted in 2014 for a similar violation, as well as in 2012.
A letter from the league said that another repetition will result in “significantly higher fines, the cancellation of future OTA days, mini-camp days, preseason or regular season practices, as well as the forfeiture of higher-round or multiple draft selections.”
The loss of a fifth-round pick is costly. The Seahawks have used the pick in previous drafts to select SS Kam Chancellor, CB Richard Sherman and TE Luke Willson.
The NFLPA put a priority on player safety during negotiations in 2011 that resulted in the current CBA.
