Jake Heaps is back for an encore at Seahawks practice this summer. The former Skyline High School star signed a free agent contract with the Seahawks over the weekend and will be one of at least four quarterbacks in camp.
Heaps was in camp last summer competing with Trevone Boykin to back up Russell Wilson. Boykin, who starred at Texas Christian and signed as an undrafted rookie, won the job. Heaps was cut after the final exhibition game in Oakland, and returned briefly to the practice squad as injuries mounted for Wilson.
Boykin did all right in six games of mop-up action in 2016, completing 13 of 18 passes for 145 yards and one touchdown and one intercepetion.
But he ran into trouble with police this off-season when he was arrested on suspicion of misdemeanor public intoxication and marijuana possession March 26 in Dallas after he was a passenger in a car crash that injured several people.
A vehicle he was in went into reverse at high speed on a public sidewalk, striking pedestrians before hitting the wall of a club. Police said eight people were injured, including the bartender inside the club.
The driver of the vehicle, Shabrika Bailey, 25, was arrested on suspicion of two felony counts of intoxication assault with a vehicle.
Four days later, Boykin was arrested again for a violation of probation stemming from the Dallas incident. The probation was a result of an incident in San Antonio prior to TCU’s appearance in the 2015 Alamo Bowl when he pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge of striking a police officer after he was thrown out of a bar.
The Seahawks have not commented on Boykin’s status other than to say they were aware of events.
Heaps helped his Sammamish school win three state titles. But he had a tumultuous college career with stops at BYU, Kansas and Miami.
Heaps will compete for practice time with Skyler Howard of West Virginia, a 5-11, 208- pounder who threw 52 touchdowns with a completion rate of 61 percent over two seasons.
“He’s a mad bomber, man,” Seahawks Carroll said Saturday after the draft was done and free agent signings began. “He threw a ton of deep balls. He goes downtown. A real resourceful kid, active on the field. Moves around well, but man he can bomb it. He hooked up a bunch this past season. It’s all over the highlights.”
The Seahawks are expected to announce the rest of their list of undrafted free agents sometime Monday.
