Hours after beating Philadelphia 10-9 Tuesday night, the Mariners early Wednesday selected former Oregon State star RHP Sam Gaviglio from AAA Tacoma, placed RHP Hisashi Iwakuma on the 10-day disabled list with inflammation in his right shoulder and transferred RHP Evan Marshall to the 60-day DL with a strained right hamstring.
Iwakuma is the fourth starting pitcher to land on the disabled list. He joins Felix Hernandez, James Paxton and Drew Smyly. He had been scheduled to pitch Thursday in Toronto.
Gaviglio will be available at 10 a.m. PT Tuesday when Seattle wraps up its two-game series with the Phillies. Gaviglio will make his MLB debut with his first appearance. In the Mariners starting lineup is 2B Robinson Cano, who was removed from the game Tuesday when a quad muscle tightened. But after testing in batting practice, he was cleared to play.
Gaviglio, who turns 27 May 22, went 2-3 with a 3.31 ERA in five starts with the Rainiers. Of the five, three were quality starts. The Mariners acquired Gaviglio from St. Louis Nov. 20, 2014 in exchange for INF Ty Kelly. The native of Ashland, OR., has played in parts of seven minor league seasons, compiling a 36-39 record with a 4.01 ERA.
He was selected by Tampa Bay in the 40th round of the 2008 draft but did not sign. After playing three seasons at Oregon State, Gaviglio was selected by the Cardinals in the fifth round of the 2011 draft.
Iwakuma is 0-2 with a 4.35 ERA. He posted back-to-back quality starts to begin the season, but since has gone 0-1 with a 5.68 ERA.
Marshall, 27, was placed on the 10-day DL May 6 after making just two pitches in the 11th inning the previous night. In six relief appearances this season, Marshall has a 9.39 ERA.
RHP Yovani Gallardo (1-3, 4.46) will throw for the Mariners Tuesday at Citizens Bank Ballpark opposite RHP Zach Eflin (0-0, 2.42).
