The Mariners Wednesday recalled RHP Chase De Jong from AAA Tacoma and, to make room on the 25-man major league roster, optioned RHP Casey Lawrence to the Rainiers. De Jong was available to the club Wednesday night when it played the third game of a four-game series against the Minnesota Twins at Target Field in Minneapolis.
De Jong, 23, is in his fourth stint with Seattle this season. In his first three, he went 0-3 with a 7.40 ERA in six games, including four starts. De Jong was acquired by the Mariners from the Dodgers in exchange for INF Drew Jackson and RHP Aneurys Zabala March 1.
Last year, De Jong combined to go 15-5 with a 2.82 ERA in 26 starts split between AA Tulsa and AAA Oklahoma City in the Dodgers minor league system.
Lawrence, 29, pitched 3.2 innings in Minnesota Tuesday night and allowed six runs on 11 hits, his worst performance of the season. He had his best June 1 vs. Colorado when he struck out nine over five innings in relief, setting the single-game club record for strikeouts by a reliever.
The Mariners (32-34) will tart RHP Sam Gaviglio (2-1, 2.79) at 5:10 p.m. PT Wednesday night opposite RHP Ervin Santana (8-3, 2.20) of the Twins.
