The Mariners Wednesday activated SS Jean Segura from his rehab assignment and, to make room on Seattle’s 25-man MLB roster, optioned INF Tyler Smith to AAA Tacoma. Segura has been on the disabled list since he was removed from a June 1 game against Colorado in the fifth inning with what was diagnosed as a high ankle sprain.

Segura, 27, was one-for-eight in two rehab games with Tacoma. When he went out, he was was hitting .341 with four home runs, 30 RBIs and had a .391 on-base percentage. His .341 BA ranked second in the American League.

Segura had two stints on the DL, also April 11-24 with a strained right hamstring.

Smith, 25, hit .188 in 10 games with Seattle. He recorded a multi-hit game June 12 at Minnesota, going 2-for-5. At Tacoma this year, Smith has hit .265 in 50 games.

Also Wednesday, the Mariners signed RHP Sam Carlson, the club’s second-round selection in the June free agent draft out of Burnsville (MN.) High School.
