    Mariners recall OF Powell, option RHP Povse

    The Mariners (40-42) Sunday recalled OF Boog Powell from AAA Tacoma to cover for the temporary absence of DH Nelson Cruz (sore knee). To make room on the 25-man roster, optioned RHP Max Povse to the Rainiers.

    The 24-year-old Powell started Sunday at DH hitting ninth and had two singles in the Mariners’ 5-3 win to take the series with the Angels 2-1.

    Powell made his third appearance with the Mariners this season. He hit .179 with two RBIs and six walks in 20 games in two previous stints. In his last 10 games with the Rainiers, he hit .474 with two homers and six RBIs. Overall withTacoma this season, he hit .333 in 41 games.

    The 5-foot-10, 185-pound outfielder was acquired by the Mariners along with RHP Nathan Karns and LHP C.J. Riefenhauser from Tampa Bay for RHP Danny Farquhar, INF Brad Miller and INF Logan Morrison Nov. 5, 2015.

    Povse, 23, made two relief appearances after being selected from AA Arkansas June 18. He posted a 10.13 ERA with two strikeouts and one walk. The 6-foot-8, 220-pounder made his MLB debut June 22 vs. Detroit. Prior to joining the Mariners, he went 3-2 with a 3.46 ERA in nine games with the Travelers.

    The Mariners acquired Povse along with RHP Rob Whalen from the Atlanta Braves in exchange for OF Alex Jackson and LHP Tyler Pike Nov. 28.

    The Mariners sent LHP James Paxton (5-3, 3.44) to the mound Sunday to face RHP Jesse Chavez (5-8, 5.04).
