The Mariners Thursday recalled RHP Max Povse from AAA Tacoma and, to make room on the 25-man major league roster, optioned RHP Sam Gaviglio back to the Rainiers. Povse was available to the club when it began a four-game set with the New York Yankees at Safeco Field Thursday night.

Povse, 23, made two relief appearances in his first stint (June 18-July 2) with the Mariners, posting a 10.13 ERA. After being selected from AA Arkansas June 18, he made his MLB debut June 22 vs. Detroit, retiring the first two batters before allowing three  runs on four consecutive hits.

Since being optioned to Tacoma July 2, he has a 11.57 ERA. In 12 games combined between AA Arkansas and Tacoma, Povse is 3-2 with a 4.33 ERA.

Povse was acquired by the Mariners along with RHP Rob Whalen from the Atlanta Braves in exchange for OF Alex Jackson and LHP Tyler Pike Nov. 28. He was selected by the Braves in the third round of the 2014 draft out of the University of North Carolina.

Gaviglio, 27, was recalled from Tacoma July 18 and made the start that day at Houston. He took his fifth loss of the season, allowing five runs on eight hits. He is 3-5, 4.62 in 12 games (11 starts).

The Mariners acquired Gaviglio from St. Louis in exchange for INF Ty Kelly Nov. 20, 2014.

RHP Felix Hernandez (5-3, 4.20) was booked Thursday for the Mariners opposite RHP Luis Severino (5-4, 3.40).
