Mariners Recall Michael Morse, Designate Bay

The Mariners Monday recalled OF Michael Morse from AAA Tacoma, activated him from the 15-day disabled list and designated OF Jason Bay for assignment. The 31-year-old Morse will rejoin the club Tuesday in Boston, where Seattle begins a three-game series at Fenway Park to launch a six-game road trip.

Morse began his rehab assignment with the Rainiers July 22 and appeared in six games, batting .250 with one double, one home run, two RBIs and six strikeouts.

Morse has been on the DL since June 22 with a strained right quadriceps muscle. He saw limited playing time after that, appearing in 11 of Seattle’s next 32 games before the club placed him on the disabled list.

Prior to his shelving, Morse hit .251 with 11 home runs and 23 RBIs in 56 games. His lack of playing time severely limited any opportunity Seattle might have entertained about moving Morse, on a one-year contract,  before the non-waiver trade deadline Wednesday afternoon.

Bay, who has played for San Diego (2003), Pittsburgh (2003-2008), Boston (2008-09), and the Mets (2010-2012), was signed by Seattle as a free agent Dec. 12.

In 68 games, Bay, a Kirkland resident, hit .204 with 11 home runs and 20 RBIs. All 11 of Bay’s home runs were solo shots.

Seattle has 10 days to trade, release or outright Bay’s contract to the minors.
