The Seattle Mariners launch their 2012 Cactus League season Friday, and have penciled in the probable pitchers for the first four games. Felix Hernandez is not among them. Manager Eric Wedge is setting up Hernandez to start the season opener in Japan March 28, so Hernandez threw a simulated game Thursday instead of working the Cactus League opener Friday against the Athletics in Phoenix.

Blake Beavan will make Seattle’s first Cactus League start, with Hector Noesi working Saturday against Oakland. Jason Vargas will start Sunday against San Diego in the annual charity league game, and Hisashi Iwakuma will work Monday, also against the Padres.

All games start at 12:05 p.m., Pacific time.

Beavan, a 6-7 right hander, appeared in 15 games (all starts) for the Mariners in 2011, going 5-6 with a 4.27 ERA. He had his best outing Sept. 16 when he allowed just four hits over eight innings in a 4-0 victory over the Texas Rangers.

Noesi, who came to the Mariners Jan. 23 along with Jesus Montero in a trade that sent Michael Pineda to the Yankees, went 2-2 for New York with a 4.47 ERA. He posted his best outing July 22 when he blanked Oakland on four hits over 3.2 innings of relief.

Vargas had a 10-13 record and 4.25 ERA in 2011 working primarily as Seattle’s third starter. His season included a 2-0 complete-game shutout over Philadelphia June 19. Vargas had four complete games in 2011, including three shutouts.

Iwakuma has yet to pitch in the major leagues, but had an extensive All-Star career in Japan. He’ll make $1.5 million guaranteed in 2012 with a potential to earn $3.4 million in incentives.
