Raul Ibañez belted a three-run home run in the first inning to jump-start the Mariners to an 8-3 victory over the San Diego Padres Sunday afternoon in Cactus League play at Peoria Stadium. The Mariners (2-1) scored five first-inning runs before an out was recorded by Padres starter and ex-Mariner ace Freddy Garcia.

Kyle Seager and Robert Andino led off with back-to-back singles before Ibañez sent a 0-1 pitch over the right field fence. Michael Morse and Michael Saunders followed with  doubles to extend the lead to 5-0.

The Mariners scored three in the fifth when Vinnie Catricala and Nick Franklin provided run-scoring doubles, and Stefen Romero added an RBI single.

The Mariners produced 16 hits from 11 batters to nine for the Padres. Seager (2-for-3), Andino (2-for-3), Ibañez (2-for-3), Jesus Montero (2-for-5) and Romero (2-for-2)  had multi-hit games.

Seattle starter Erasmo Ramirez (1-0) earned the win by allowing one hit in a scoreless inning of work. Relievers James Paxton (1.0 IP, 1 K), Tom Wilhelmsen (1.0 IP, BB, K), Stephen Pryor (1.0 IP, BB), Carter Capps (1.0 IP, 2 BB) and Josh Kinney (1.0 IP, K) turned in scoreless outings.

The Padres scored an unearned run in the fourth on a single by center fielder Cameron Maybin. Yasmani Grandal added a run-scoring single in the eighth and Alexi Amarista added a RBI double in the ninth.

The Mariners play the Angels at 12:05 p.m. PT at Peoria Stadium. RHP Jeremy Bonderman is scheduled to start against Angels right-hander Garrett Richards.

So far so good, averaging over 6 runs a game. Hopefully Z knows offense.
