Dan O’Brien, who served as president and general manager of the Mariners from 1979-83, died in Dallas Tuesday at 87. O’Brien made the first managerial change in franchise history and spearheaded efforts that resulted in Seattle landing the 1979 Major League All-Star Game, played in the Kingdome. Takeaway They hung close with the California Golden Bears Thursday night, but the Washington Huskies men’s basketball team allowed a 14-6 run over the final six minutes, fading to  69-59 defeat at Haas Pavilion in Berkeley (box).
